Working with Layers 1

Introducing Layers:

A model can be made up of as many layers as you need, and each layer can contain as many objects as you wish. For example you may have separate layers for furniture, walls and flooring, you may have layers for ground, first and second floor, or you may have layers for modelling, object storage and experimentation.

Layer settings are changed through the Organization Box and/or the Navigation Palette.

  • To create a new layer go to Tools> Organization >Design Layers >New. You can give your layer a name and also position it in your layer hierarchy. (Note that you can also go straight to the Layers Settings box by clicking on the Layers Icon in the Data Display Bar).
  • To switch between layers use the Layers pull down menu. This shows the ‘active layer’, (unless inside an extrude, symbol, subtraction etc). You can also access the Layers Set-up through this Menu.
  • To move objects between layers simply select and change Layer in the Object Info Palette. This will position the object/objects at exactly the same co-ordinates within the new layer.
  • You can copy and paste objects, groups etc between layers. The most useful option being the Edit> Paste in Place command.
